Why Online Banks can offer Higher Interest Rates

It should probably come as no surprise that online banks have popped up all over the place; after all you can do almost anything online these days. Online banks offer a lot of advantages that you wouldn't be able to get from other banks but the biggest for most people is that they offer higher interest rates than you would get from a regular bank, there are few reasons for this.

The main reason that online banks can offer higher interest rates is that they have a lower overhead than regular banks would have. It can be pretty expensive to run a physical bank with the need to maintain branches and have employees to staff those branches. The money to pay for them has to come from somewhere and in large part it comes from paying a lower interest rate than they would otherwise be able to pay. Since online banks obviously have none of this infrastructure they are able to pay a higher amount.

In a lot of cases online banks also pay higher interest rates because they have to rather than simply because they can. There are still a lot of people who have not recognized the advantages that online banking can offer which makes it tough for these banks to attract customers. In order to get around this problem most online banks will offer a higher interest rate in order to lure people in. This is why the interest rate that is offered by online banks is so much higher than you would get from a regular bank. A slightly higher interest rate is not going to bring in too many people which is why you usually see a rate that is quite a bit higher from online banks.

Of course interest rates are just one of the things that you have to look at when you are choosing a bank, the other is fees. In most cases these days the fees are going to be more of an issue than the interest rate, especially with a checking account. Therefore instead of trying to maximize the interest rate that you receive you are likely going to be better off trying to minimize your fees. Again the online banks have the advantage here for the same reason that they have the advantage when it comes to interest rates.

While finding the highest interest rates and the lowest fees are important they can't be the only factors that you consider when you are choosing a bank account. You have to make sure that the account that you choose is going to meet your needs, if it doesn't the interest rate really isn't going to matter. Online bank accounts have a lot of advantages that make them a good option for most people so it is a good idea to see if one will meet your needs.
